Research areas and technologies

Our research focuses on understanding the biological mechanisms underlying disease and translating scientific discoveries into future treatments. The focus areas of our pharmaceutical R&D are oncology and pain. We also develop veterinary and generic medicines.

At the heart of our work is the desire to improve quality of life and address unmet medical needs.

Oncology research

Our goal is to develop new and effective treatments for solid-tumour cancers.

We study the genetic and molecular drivers of solid-tumour cancers to better understand how tumours grow, resist treatment and survive.

By targeting these internal and external mechanisms, we aim to develop more precise and effective therapies. Our research also focuses on identifying patients who are most likely to benefit from treatment through genetic and molecular analysis approaches.

Our research includes advanced biological medicines such as antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates and CAR-T cell therapies.

Innovative treatments

We have a long history in developing novel therapies for a wide range of diseases and treatment needs.

Pain research

Our goal is to develop more effective, safer and non-addictive medicines that can fill the gaps in existing treatment options.

Pain is one of the most complex and undertreated medical challenges. Our research focuses on improving the understanding of pain mechanisms and identifying new approaches for pain management.

By combining biological insight with translational research, we are developing non-addictive medicines for acute and chronic pain that target the biological signals behind pain, not just its symptoms.

Neurological disorders medicines

Orion has a long track record in developing new medicine for the treatment of neurological diseases. As a result of these research projects new medicines for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease have been developed.

Veterinary medicines

Orion’s innovative veterinary product development has a long history. In addition, our human drug and formulation innovations are utilised when new therapies and treatment methods are being developed for animals.

Generic medicines

Orion also develops and co-develops new generic medicinal substances in collaboration with its partners. A generic drug is a drug that contains the same active pharmaceutical ingredient as a corresponding proprietary product that no longer has patent protection.

The development of generic drugs is more simple and economical than the development of proprietary drugs since the necessary studies on the active ingredient have already been carried out. The development of generics usually takes two to three years.
